It’s time to break out the shoeboxes once again! Yahoo!
I love this idea.
Our family has participated in Operation Christmas Child for a few years now. The boys have sometimes joined me on shopping trips to fill the shoe boxes with Christmas goodies for children in developing countries. Other times I’ve collected small items all year in anticipation of dropping off our three boxes during the collection week. Then the boys have helped to fill the boxes and come with me to drop them off. Last year, in the midst of major home renovations, we simply filled a box online!
There are so many ways to participate in this wonderful gift-giving initiative by Samaritan’s Purse.
I’ve been saving up loot bag toys from birthday parties the boys have been to – asking them if they really want all the things in their loot bags – if not, can I put them in the shoe boxes at Christmas time? They are usually quite willing to share the items they get. Toys from restaurants as well. Then I made a small list of hygiene items like washcloth, toothbrush, soap, comb – and Josh picked those up to finish filling the boxes.
Every member of Team Sklar has played a part in packing these boxes full of love for children around the globe – each in our own ways.
Next we’ll pray for the children who will receive them. We always put together 3 boxes – one for each of our boys.
Then we’ll drop them off at a local collection point in the next couple of days.
So simple, so easy, so wonderful, so much blessing – for the givers and the receivers.
